Introducing Weekly Updates: A New Chapter on the Untold Stories Blog

Good afternoon lovely readers and writers,

Having welcomed several new subscribers this month, I thought I’d begin this new blog segment with a short introduction. My name is Francesca Tyer. I am a multi-genre author – YA fantasy series The Elemental Prophesy and standalone literary fiction novel Edge of the Shore – and founder of the Untold Stories Academy, a business through which I offer creative writing workshops, professional editing, and1-2-1 mentoring services.

I am, unsurprisingly, passionate about writing. Like many authors, I’ve spent my whole life writing. From a childhood spent writing short stories, poems and plays, to an adulthood of novel drafting and first publications, writing is integral to who I am. I think about writing constantly, jotting down ideas whenever I get the chance. Notebooks, laptop, phone, scraps of paper… I’m not one for keeping my notes neatly in one place.

My passion for writing now extends into the rest of my working life as well. I set up the Untold Stories Academy in 2021 with the aim of supporting writers at all stages of their careers. Having worked as a freelance editor and workshop facilitator for several years, I'd picked up on several common struggles my clients were facing. These included a fear of putting pen to paper, a lack of confidence in writing skills and ideas, and mental blocks when it came to unleashing their imagination.

The writing industry is difficult to navigate, especially in an age of celebrity culture, AI, and intensive social media marketing. It's easy to get lost along the way, worrying about reader opinions, online content, finances, and countless other concerns. With so much to think about, the actual writing of a book (or poem, or play) can become side-lined. For me, the writing process should be enjoyed and celebrated. It makes me sad to see so many books flooding the market that have either been generated by AI or written by people who don't really care about the writing part at all. For that reason, I choose to work with authors who truly believe in what they are doing. Those who see themselves building a career out of their work or achieving a lifelong dream.

So now I come back to this blog and what it is for. I've spent years writing blogs on and off, mainly feature articles such as author interviews and writing tips. This blog will be shorter and less formal, a place to share updates from my writing life – including challenges and successes – and advice for writers based on my experience as an editor, mentor, and creative writing tutor. You can expect to learn a great deal about the craft of writing and editing, including practical tools to apply to your own work.

I can't wait to share this journey with all of you.

Francesca x
